This is what the job involves. When you compare estimates, look for these steps — they are where the difference in price usually hides.
A few photos of the room on WhatsApp — in daylight if you can — is the best way to start.
- 01 We start with the room: which way it faces, how much daylight it gets, and what the floors, counters and furniture are already doing
- 02 A short list of real contenders — usually two or three — rather than a fan deck to agonise over
- 03 Large sample boards you can move from wall to wall and live with for a few days, instead of small patches painted over the old colour
- 04 Trim, ceiling and door colours chosen together with the walls, not left for the day the painters arrive
- 05 The right sheen for each surface, so the colour looks the way it did when you chose it
- 06 For open-plan homes, a plan for where one colour stops and the next begins
Why it matters
A colour is only right in its own room.
North-facing rooms pull colours cool and grey. South and west light warms them through the afternoon. Floors, counters and lamps shift them again. Choosing in the room itself is how you avoid repainting a wall you only just finished.
